How to ace your online interview and stand out

Job interviews can be stressful and intimidating, but it always helps to be well prepared. By thinking a few steps ahead, you will maximize your chances of being selected as the best candidate for the job!

Research the company in advance

By knowing the company and its values, you would stand out to the interviewer because they will see that you care about the job and are genuinely interested in the position. Employers do not want to hire someone who doesn’t know anything about the organization they will be working in, so it is important to do some research into the company.

Be prepared for the basic interview questions

Think about what you might be asked during the interview. By preparing your answers in advance to some of the common questions during job interviews, you will not have to think about your accomplishments, weaknesses or any other critical skills because you will have a prepared answer. Reflect on your accomplishments and skills you have acquired throughout your experience in the workforce. Here are a few common questions the recruiter might ask you:

  • Why should we hire you?
  • What’s your biggest weakness?
  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
  • Tell me about a challenge you overcame at work?
  • If I call your current/previous employer, what would he/she say about you?
  • Tell me about your experiences related to the job position you are applying to?

Practice with a friend or family member

We know it can be intimidating to be interviewed for a job by a stranger, so it is always a good idea to practice with your friend or family member. They will be able to give you feedback on what points you could work on to make the best impression. If you have your answers ready, it will be easier for you be more open and friendly with the interviewer.

Reread the job description to find any skills you can mention during the interview

Before the interview, familiarize yourself with the job description and skills the employer is looking for in the perfect candidate. You may have some of the key skills required for the job, so it is important to mention them when talking about your work experience to point out your suitability for the position.

Prepare questions

Prepare a few questions to ask the employer at the end of the interview. It is always good to show your interest in the job and company, so don’t be afraid to ask questions! It could be what makes you stand out to the employer.
